The dream of every woman is to grow and flaunt shiny, luscious, beautiful and healthy hair. Achieving that dream requires maximum hair care and choosing the right products which start with understanding your hair type, texture and hair porosity level and finally finding the right product that works best and suits your hair.

It doesn’t matter how well a product may work for another natural, the same product may also not work the same way for your hair. Even if a product has great reviews and has good-quality, it might not be good for you

Tips 1: Hair Type

When you talk of hair type, you talk about its texture, density and thickness and by knowing your hair type, finding the proper balance that your hair needs would be much more easier. Determining your hair type is very vital for knowing which products would work best for your hair.

To determine the texture of your hair, you have to measure how dense or thick each individual strand of your hair is.

Hair texture is categorized into 3 section: Fine, Coarse, and Normal. The reason for thick and thin hair are the size and shape of the hair follicles

To measure your hair texture, take a strand of hair and glide through it using your index finger and thumb. If the hair strand feel smooth you have fine hair but. If you  feel bumps or toughness, you have coarse or thick texture.

Tip 2: Hair Porosity

Hair porosity simply tells how well your hair is able to absorb and retain moisture.

One of the easiest way to determine your hair porosity is to place a clean strand of your hair into a glass of clean water and observe, after 3 mins, if the hair strand still floats on the surface of the water, it’s low porosity, if it sinks almost immediately, it has high porosity but If the strand stays suspended in the middle of the water, it is medium porosity.

Low porosity means that your hair cuticles are tightly closed and doesn’t easily absorbs products and is protein sensitive, high porosity means cuticles of your hair are widely open and can easily absorb products, it is not protein sensitive.

When you know your hair porosity, you should always consider two critical hair needs when choosing your products which are moisture and protein.

Tip 3: Choosing the Right Products

To maintain a healthy natural hair, you need a healthy hair care regimen and only the basic Products: shampoo, conditioner, leave in, oil or butter because if you use too many products on your natural hair, you may end up having an opposite result, hair under too heavy treatment might react badly. Styling products are optional depending on how you prefer to wear your hair.

Shampoo: you have to consider two types of shampoos: moisturizing shampoos and clarifying shampoos.

  • Moisturizing shampoo; a good moisturising shampoo is one that won’t strip your hair dry and is sulfate free like OLEENA ORGANICS SHEABLEND SHAMPOO. This is mostly used on every washday until it is time to deeply cleanse your hair.
  • Clarifying shampoo: this type of shampoo is used you have do many visible product build-up to deeply clean your scalp and hair but they strip the hair making it squeaky clean. It is not to be used on every washday, once in while is okay

Conditioners: there are 3 types of conditioners; leave in conditioner, rinse-out conditioner and deep conditioner. All these three can be used in balancing both moisture and protein depending on what your needs.

  • Deep conditioners: this type of deep conditioners are used to add additional moisture or protein to the hair strands. They are to be  applied and left in your hair anywhere between 20-30 minutes. In order to reap the full benefits of a deep conditioner, it is recommended to utilize heat when applying your deep conditioner, this also helps for easy penetration of the deep conditioner into your hair strands.

Deep conditioners are of two types:

  1. Moisture deep conditioner: this is used when the hair lacks moisture. This type of deep conditioner can really help with the battle of dry hair. We recommend OLEENA ORGANICS INTENSE MOISTURE DEEP CONDITIONER. When choosing a moisturizing deep conditioner the ingredients list should contain more of humectants and fatty alcohols.
  2. Protein deep conditioner: this is used to repair weak and damaged hair follicles and also helps to build tissue cells that keeps the hair healthy. When it comes to hair, protein is essential but too much of it in the hair can cause more damage to the hair because protein occurs naturally in our hair. We recommend OLEENA ORGANICS ALOE RICE DEEP CONDITIONER

Moisture and protein deep conditioners should be used to balance moisture and treatment in the hair. Observe how your hair feels before using anyone on them. Moreover, moisturising conditioners should be used more consistently than a protein deep conditioner or treatment. However, protein based deep conditioners are only used when necessary.

  • Leave-in conditioners: Just as the name implies, leave-in conditioners are applied to the hair and not rinsed out.
  • Rinse out conditioners: this type is the regular conditioner that is used after shampooing your hair. It can also be used for detangling your hair before shampooing because it creates great slip. It’s recommended to leave your rinse-out conditioner in for 5-10 minutes according to the instructions.

Tip 4: Consider Your Climate/Season You Live in

When choosing the right product for your natural hair, you should also consider the climate or season because seasonal changes can make you change the kind of products you use depending on the weather. For instance, when you use a product that contains humectants like glycerin during dry weather, you may notice that you hair will be prone to becoming dry, however, it may work very well in other climates.

Tip 5: Consider the ingredients list:

A product that promises moisture infusion should contain more of moisturising ingredients and it should be listed within the first five ingredients but if those ingredients are not listed within the first 5 of the ingredients list it may not give you the results you are expecting.
