Hair Care Regimen

All hair type needs love and care. Having a care regimen encompasses just washing and styling your hair. Some other factors like the overall health of your hair, elasticity, thickness and shine of your hair is also inclusive.

For one to have an effective hair care regimen, repetition, consistency and patience is needed and as long as it is concerned, hair care regimen needs to be as simple as possible depending on what on what works for you.

What is a Hair Care Regimen?

A hair regimen is a routine set aside (by you) to help guide you on how to care for your hair. It helps you learn how to effectively care for your hair and makes you aware of what your hair likes and dislikes.

Hair care regimen is categorized into the following:

  • Washday routine
  • Non washday routine
  • Trim

Washday Routine

Everyone loves a healthy hair but without a proper washday routine, the dream of growing your hair healthy and longer seems impossible. No matter what hair type, pattern, porosity, hair length, one needs a simple washday routine to keep your hair and scalp in good shape.

The components of a simple washday routine include:

  1. Prepoo/detangle
  2. Shampoo/cleanse
  3. Deep condition
  4. Moisturize
  5. Seal
  6. Protective style

Prepoo/detangle: This simply means preparing your hair for a shampoo wash. You can’t just jump into the shower to shampoo your hair with a tangled hair hair with knots. You should carefully treat your hair first by detangling your hair with a good conditioner that has a great a slip, oil or aloe vera.

To do this:

Start by putting your hair in sections, spritz your hair with water, apply your detangler, use your fingers to gently detangle your hair, use a wide tooth comb or detangling brush to further get rid of knots or shed hair, cover your hair with a shower cap or nylon bag for about an 1hr and proceed to shampoo your hair.

Shampoo: This should always be the second step on your washdays.

How to:

Drench your hair in water, allow your the water to slightly rinse out the detangler in your hair, apply the shampoo on your scalp, gently massage the shampoo in focusing more on your scalp, use your fingers pads or a scalp massager to get the job done, let the lather from the shampoo run through your hair shaft while you gently wash your entire hair, rinse out shampoo when you feel hair and scalp is neat enough.

Deep condition: Most people skip this step and it’s so wrong to do so. I call this the most crucial part of washday because of its  benefits.

How to:

After rinsing out the shampoo and while your hair is still in sections, apply your favorite deep conditioner starting from the tips of your hair and the rest of your hair shaft. You don’t necessarily have to detangle because the prepoo has already eased the stress, cover your hair with a nylon bag, apply heat by putting on a heat cap or steamer to make the deep conditioner get absorbed into your shaft easily, wait for 20-30mins before rinsing out.

Moisturize: your hair needs enough moisture. Applying a leave in conditioner to further add moisture to your hair is a great thing to do.

How to:

After rinsing out the deep conditioner with only water, pat your hair dry with a micro fiber towel or an old t-shirt, apply your favorite leave in conditioner to add more moisture to your hair.

We recommend our aloe vera leave in conditioner

Seal: You can’t just apply moisture and leave without sealing in the moisture. The moisture will escape from your hair and leave your hair feeling so dry.

How to:

After applying your leave in moisturizer, use a cream with a thicker consistency (or hair butter) to further seal in moisture, you can use an oil to seal in moisture. Find what works best for you, cream, butter or oil.

Bonus tip

Scalp massage: use a penetrating oil or an oil blend to massage your scalp for at least 2mins. This helps to stimulate blood which enhances growth

Non Washday Routine

You don’t have to wait till your next washday day to keep your hair moisturized. That would be starving your hair and depriving of it’s needs. Non washday routine requires you to moisturize your hair before your next washday.

This involves moisturizing your hair using either LOC or LCO methods of applying moisture depending on which works for you for you

Meaning of acronyms: Liquid, Oil, Cream and vise versa

Check out the post on LOC vs LCO method https://www.oleenaorganics.com/2022/03/28/loc-vs-lco-method/

Trim: Trimming your hair helps improve the health of your ends. The longer your hair gets, the weaker the ends and the more prone to breakage because of splits, knots. Once in a while use a hair shear to cut off rough ends to keep them healthy and to encourage length retention
